What is DOCX File Extension?

Overview

DOCX files belong to Microsoft Word 2007 and later for Windows and Microsoft Word 2008 and later for Mac OS X. These document files can store text, images, styles, formatting, drawn objects, and other document-centric elements.

DOCX files use Open XML formatting, which means the document consists of multiple files and folders stored in a compressed (ZIP) format.

Older versions of Microsoft Word (such as Word 2003) cannot natively open DOCX files. However, with the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, users of Word 2000, 2002, and 2003 could open, edit, and save DOCX files with some limitations.
