A BK2 file is most often a Bink 2 game video or a BizHawk emulator movie. The two share an ending and nothing else. Bink 2 is a video format from RAD Game Tools. BizHawk movies are zip files of button presses that replay games.
The first four letters of your BK2 file show which one you have. Videos start with KB2 and one more letter. Movies start with PK, because they are zip files. Windows Indexing Service data is a rare third kind.
Double-clicking rarely works for either kind. Use RAD Video Tools for videos and BizHawk for movies. Check which kind of BK2 file you have before you install anything.
Most BK2 files are Bink 2 game videos or BizHawk emulator movies. Bink 2 BK2 files start with the letters KB2. BizHawk BK2 files are zip files and start with PK.
Picture a friend who sends you intro.bk2 and calls it a game video. You double-click it. Windows asks which app to use, or your player displays an error. Then you check the size and see 3 KB. That is too small for any video. Most questions about BK2 files start right there.
The ending has two common owners. RAD Game Tools made Bink 2, the video format used in games. The BizHawk emulator uses the same letters for movies, which store the buttons its players pressed. FileInfo lists the video and a Windows Indexing Service file. It leaves out the BizHawk movie, which TASVideos documents.
BizHawk BK2 files are zip files. Bink 2 BK2 files are videos. The two are unrelated and need different apps. The section on the two kinds takes under one minute.
A few other things use the ending too, but rarely. They include Windows Indexing Service data, WordPerfect backups and accounting data files. The section on other meanings covers them.

Which Kind of BK2 File Do You Have? Read the first four letters, then check the size and the folder
Open your BK2 file in Notepad and read the first letters. KB2 plus one more letter means Bink 2 video. PK means BizHawk movie. Anything else needs a look at the folder.
This check needs no special software. Right-click the BK2 file, select Open with and choose Notepad. Most of the text looks like noise, and that is normal. Read only the first four characters of the BK2 file, then close the window without saving.

Notepad displays the first column as letters. The hex above is what a hex viewer displays for those bytes. 4B 42 32 spells KB2, and 50 4B spells PK.
Two more clues besides the letters

What Is a Bink 2 Video BK2 File? Game cutscenes from RAD Game Tools
Bink 2 is a game video format from RAD Game Tools. Its BK2 files contain video and sound, and games play them for cutscenes and menus.
Game makers use Bink because it plays smoothly while the game is busy. RAD says Bink 2 decodes on many CPU cores, and on the graphics chip on some platforms. It also says over 16,000 games license the format.
The first Bink format arrived in 1999. Bink 2 followed in 2013 and, according to Wikipedia, is faster and handles larger pictures. Gamers rarely see BK2 files, because the game opens them.
What RAD says about Bink 2
RAD does not mention the .bk2 ending on its product page. FileInfo's entry for BIK2 adds that people save Bink 2 files as BK2 more often than as BIK2.
Games that use BK2 videos
The file-extensions.org page names F1 2015, DiRT Rally and XCOM 2. The RedModding wiki documents Bink 2 BK2 files in Cyberpunk 2077. One sample on the VLC bug tracker came from BattleBlock Theater and measures 1280 by 720 at 30 frames per second. We did not check any game folder ourselves.
What the start of a Bink 2 file looks like
Every Bink file begins with a short header. Its layout comes from the reader code in FFmpeg, a free video toolkit. We wrote one tiny test file with that layout, because we could not get a real game video. The file has a header and no picture.

FFmpeg 6.1.1 read the container of that file and reported 320 by 240 at 30 frames per second. It listed the video codec as unknown, so it cannot decode Bink 2. The conversion section shows the result beside the other kinds.
What Is a BizHawk BK2 Movie File? A zip file of button presses
BizHawk BK2 files are zip files. They store the buttons a player pressed on every frame, plus a header with the game and the system. They have no picture and no sound.
BizHawk is an emulator that plays games from many old systems. Players use it to record playthroughs as button presses. When BizHawk loads the BK2 file, it feeds those presses back to the game, and the same play happens again. The game does the drawing, and the BK2 file only stores the input.
TASVideos documents the format. BK2 replaced the older BKM format, which BizHawk used up to version 1.7.2. Any zip tool, for example 7-Zip, opens BizHawk BK2 files.

One more sample names its two main files Header and Input Log, with no .txt ending. That brings both counts to 90. One sample has no header, and one has no input log. The test authors built those two to be broken.

The LogKey line only names the buttons for readers, and BizHawk ignores it, according to TASVideos. Controls with numbers, like the first column above, show the number and then a comma.
The rerecord count records how often the author loaded an earlier state and tried again. It is a normal field, and zero is not an error.
What Do 91 BizHawk BK2 Files Show? Sizes, entries, platforms and tool results
We read 91 BizHawk BK2 files from the TASVideos test collection. All 91 are zip files, the biggest is 3,241 bytes and none is a video.
TASVideos, the site that publishes these playthroughs, keeps BK2 test files in the open-source code of its website. Its authors built some by hand to test their parser, and some are broken on purpose. We downloaded the set in October 2026. Every file is different, and we checked that with hashes.
We opened every file with the Python zipfile module, read the header and counted the lines of the input log. We also tested the files in FFmpeg and the Linux file command. The set shows what BK2 files can contain. It does not show how common every case is in real life.

The header names the system with a short code. Forty different codes appear in the 90 headers, and 30 of them appear only once.

The eight guesses are noise. FFmpeg tries every format it knows, and random bytes can pass for one at score 2. No stream came out of any of them. Neither tool saw a video, because there is none.
What the counts say about BK2 files
Read the counts with care. Most of these files were written to test one rule of a parser. Real movies from TASVideos are bigger, list a game hash and often name a core. The counts show what readers must handle, not how common every case is.
Check your own BizHawk BK2 file
Python reads BizHawk movies in a few lines. Replace movie.bk2 with your file name. The code prints the entry names, the header and the number of frames. If the file is not a zip, it says so.

What a wrong guess costs
Guess video, and you download a Bink player and open a movie in it. The player refuses, and you blame the file. Guess movie, and you load a game video in BizHawk, which also refuses. In both cases the file is healthy. You chose the wrong app.
Bink 2 BK2 files start with a signature and a revision letter. The RedModding guide says modders had to change the fourth byte of their files to 6A before Cyberpunk 2077 would show them. Hex 6A is the letter j. One letter decided whether the game accepted the video.
Check the letters first. Open the BK2 file in Notepad and read the first four characters. Then choose the app. You save an hour of trying apps that do not fit.

Open Bink 2 BK2 files
- Confirm the BK2 file starts with KB2 and one more letter.
- On Windows, use RAD Video Tools from RAD Game Tools. FileInfo's BK2 entry lists it as the free program for Bink 2 files.
- On a Mac, use the Bink Player from RAD. It has one build for Intel Macs and another for Apple silicon Macs.
- On Linux, RAD has a command-line Bink Player for x86 systems. Make the file executable before you start it.
- Open the BK2 file from the program. To see a game cutscene, let the game play it for you.
Open BizHawk BK2 files
- Confirm the BK2 file starts with PK.
- Open a copy in a zip tool and read Header.txt. It names the platform, and often the game and the core.
- Open BizHawk and load the game the author used.
- Look for the movie option in the BizHawk menus and open the BK2 file there. We did not use BizHawk for this guide, so follow its menu names.

Why Will a BK2 File Not Open? Five causes, and only one of them is the file
When your BK2 file will not open, check the kind, the app, the decoder, the game and the file. Only the last check blames the file.
Most failures are mismatches between the file and the app. The file is fine, and the app does not fit it. Work through five checks before you look for another copy. The red one is the only check where the file itself is wrong.
A five-step check
- Show file extensions and confirm the name ends in .bk2 and not in .bk2.exe or .bk2.zip.
- Open the BK2 file in Notepad and read the first four characters.
- If it starts with KB2, open it in RAD Video Tools. If it plays there, your first player lacks a Bink 2 decoder.
- If it starts with PK, open a copy in 7-Zip. A zip that opens and shows Header.txt is a healthy movie.
- Read GameName and Core in Header.txt, then load that game in BizHawk. If 7-Zip reports an error, download the file again.
Test in the right app first. RAD Video Tools for videos and 7-Zip for movies settle the question in a minute. If the BK2 file opens there, it was never damaged.
How Do You Convert a BK2 File to MP4? Video converts, and a movie does not
RAD Video Tools can convert Bink 2 BK2 files to MP4. BizHawk BK2 files cannot become videos, because they store button presses and no picture.
Convert only after you know the kind. We tested three kinds of file in FFmpeg 6.1.1, a free toolkit that reads and converts most video formats. Two of the files are tiny ones we wrote ourselves. They have Bink headers and no picture, because we could not get a real game video.

FFmpeg knows the Bink 1 codec and reads that file. For Bink 2 it knows the container and not the codec. The VLC request quotes an older FFmpeg, version 4.2.3, with the message that Bink 2 video is not implemented. Our newer version agrees. We have no real Bink 2 video, so we cannot say how full game files behave.
Convert a Bink 2 BK2 file to MP4
- Confirm the BK2 file starts with KB2.
- Open RAD Video Tools, the free program from RAD Game Tools.
- Open the BK2 file in it and select MP4 as the output. The RedModding conversion steps describe this for a game folder and say batch conversion works. We did not use RAD Video Tools here, so button names may differ.
- Edit the MP4 in any video editor if you need to.
- Going back to a game? The same wiki says to export to Bink 2 again, and it gives 480p at 15 frames per second for that one game.

BizHawk BK2 files cannot become videos by conversion
BizHawk BK2 files store inputs. The game makes the picture while BizHawk plays the movie. To get a video, play the movie in BizHawk and record what it shows. We did not test recording, so check the BizHawk menus for a video option.
Be careful with upload sites. Sites that offer to convert any BK2 file online cannot know which kind you have. BizHawk movies are a few kilobytes of text with nothing to convert. Read the first letters before you upload anything.
How Do You Read or Edit a BK2 File? Unzip a movie and read two text files
To read a BizHawk BK2 file, open a copy in a zip tool and view Header.txt and Input Log.txt in Notepad. Do not edit Bink 2 BK2 files in a text editor.
BizHawk BK2 files are zip files of text, so you need no special software. A zip tool and Notepad do the job. Bink 2 BK2 files are binary data, and a text editor would damage them.
Read a BizHawk BK2 file
- Copy the BK2 file so you can go back.
- Open the copy in 7-Zip, or rename the copy to end in .zip and open it in Windows.
- Open Header.txt in Notepad. Read the Platform, GameName and Core lines.
- Open Input Log.txt. Every line that starts with a pipe is one frame.
- Close the files without saving. If you must edit, save the files back into the zip under the same names.
Changing an input line changes what the game does. The replay can stop matching the original play after one changed frame. Keep the original file safe.
Four rules for clean BK2 edits
Do not edit Bink 2 BK2 files by hand
The one hand edit we found is the revision byte. The RedModding hex edit steps say to change the fourth byte to 6A in a hex editor for Cyberpunk 2077, and they share a Python script for entire folders. That fix is for that one game. Make a copy before you try it.
Is It Safe To Open a BK2 File? Neither kind is a program, and the risk is the name
BizHawk BK2 files are zips of text, and Bink 2 BK2 files are video data. Neither kind is a program. The real risks are a fake name and a file from an unknown source.
We read 91 BizHawk BK2 files and found text, one save-data file and no program. No entry had an .exe or .dll name. We did not search antivirus databases, so we make no claim about malware beyond that count.
A safety check before you open it
- Show file extensions. Names like game.bk2.exe are programs, so read the EXE program file guide and do not open them.
- Check the source. Bink 2 BK2 files from your game are part of the game. BizHawk BK2 files from TASVideos are public. A BK2 file in a message you did not expect needs care.
- Read the first letters in Notepad. That step is safe, because nothing starts.
- For movies, list the zip entries before you load them. Expect Header.txt, Input Log.txt and a few small extras.
- Keep BizHawk and your Bink player up to date, and scan files from people you do not know.
Safe to read, careful to open. Reading the first letters and listing the zip entries is safe. Load movies or play videos only when you trust the source.
How Does a BK2 File Differ From BIK, BKM and BKF? Same letters, different jobs
BK2 and BIK files are both Bink video, and Bink 2 is the newer one. BKM files are the older BizHawk movies. BKF files are Windows backups and belong to neither.
Several endings look alike and mean different things. The table sorts them by what they are and by the letters they start with. Mix them up and you search for the wrong app.

The reader code in FFmpeg lists the Bink letters. For Bink 1 it accepts BIK followed by b, f, g, h, i or k. For Bink 2 it accepts KB2 followed by a, d, f, g, h, i, j or k. The signature is the fastest way to separate the two generations.

What Else Does the BK2 Ending Mean? Indexing Service data and three rare files
Four rare files also use the .bk2 ending. The best known is the Windows Indexing Service file, usually named propstor.bk2. None of them is made to open by hand.
If your BK2 file starts with neither KB2 nor PK, it may be none of the main kinds. Two websites list the other meanings of the BK2 file ending, and the table shows them.

FileInfo's list of meanings describes the Indexing Service file. The file-extensions.org list adds the other three. Microsoft says its Indexing Service is unavailable as of Windows 8 and names Windows Search as the replacement. Files like this most likely come from older Windows versions.
We found no public sample of these four files, and no Microsoft page about the file itself. So we say nothing about its bytes, and we cannot say whether deleting it is safe.

BK2 files have two layouts. Bink 2 videos start with a signature and a header. BizHawk movies are zip files with a text header and an input log.

About the file signature
The first letters are the best test. Bink 2 videos start with KB2 and a revision letter. BizHawk movies start with PK, the mark of every zip file. We found no media type for either one that we could confirm, so we list none.
What we left out
We did not use BizHawk, RAD Video Tools or a Bink Player, so we give no menu names for them. We had no real Bink 2 video, only one header we wrote ourselves. So we say nothing about real game files beyond what RAD, FileInfo and the other pages state.
We do not say that VLC cannot play Bink 2 today. The tracker request is about version 3.0.16, and we did not test newer ones. We also found no source for the bytes of the Indexing Service file or for deleting it.
Two pages differ in what they list. RAD does not mention the .bk2 ending on its product page, and FileInfo does not list the BizHawk movie. We follow RAD for the video and TASVideos for the movie.

Can VLC play a BK2 file?
Not BizHawk movies, because they have no video. For Bink 2 videos, a request on the VLC bug tracker says VLC 3.0.16 played the sound but not the picture. We did not test newer versions. RAD Video Tools is the program RAD supports.
Is a BK2 file safe to open?
Neither main kind is a program. Reading the first letters and listing the zip entries is safe. Show file extensions first, because game.bk2.exe is a program. Load files only from sources you trust.
What is the difference between BK2 and BIK?
Both are Bink video from RAD Game Tools. BIK is the first format, from 1999, and starts with BIK. BK2 is Bink 2, from 2013, and starts with KB2. The BK2 ending also names BizHawk movies, which are zip files.
What is a propstor.bk2 file?
FileInfo says it is a Windows Indexing Service data file, usually in a catalog folder under System Volume Information. Microsoft says Indexing Service is unavailable as of Windows 8. We found no public sample, so we cannot say whether deleting it is safe.
